A Man who
truly was the Meaning of a Yachtsman!
Al Henning was much more that just a great sailor. He
was a great father and a great leader. The following are just a few of
his accomplishments. Al was a past commodore of Columbia Yacht Club and
was an integral part of bringing the “Abby” to Chicago. The “Abby” is the
current home of CYC and a beautiful addition to the Chicago Skyline. As
well as being a past commodore of Columbia Yacht Club, Al was an active
USYRU Judge, a Lake Michigan PHRF Representative, and the Race Director at
Racine Yacht Club. He enjoyed racing his boats, first Wild Pansy, and
better known Poltergeist.
Al brought up his children to have the same love and
passion for the water as he did. He raised one son who became active in a
sail loft and then participated in the Heart of America Challenge in the
America’s Cup. Another son is a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer of the United
States Navy. His daughter was the International Class Secretary for the
Star Class and his youngest son serves on the Lake Michigan PHRF
Committee, Vice President of the U20 Class Association, Racine Yacht
Club's Race Director and races his Ultimate 20, Goombay Smash, out of
Racine Yacht Club with his two sons.
In honor of Al Henning, Racine Yacht Club runs
this memorial regatta (formally the Racine Regatta). If you can’t bring a
boat to race, come to the party to celebrate all of his accomplishments
with those who knew him. |
